Assa, balance and joy

Assa, balance and joy

A great vineyard on the banks of the river Ebro

Driving along the N-232a, halfway between Laguardia and Logroño, we admire the neat view of a large, flat vineyard nestled between the road and the river Ebro. It is known as Viña Assa, 24 hectares of Tempranillo and Graciano named after a nearby hamlet.

The fruit to make our Viña Eguía reds comes from here. These high-quality grapes are grown on 15+-year-old vines which benefit from a unique microclimate and soil. This special location is one of the virtues that is reflected in our grapes.

The place oozes balance and joy. Rows of neatly lined vines, well-cared-for soils and tidy geometry. On the other side, the midday sun exposure, the proximity to the waters of the great river, the freshness of the green groves on the river banks. The harmonious balance of a healthy, fertile, honest agriculture is felt in Assa. Framed by the unmistakable rocky ridges of the Sierra de Cantabria on the background, the spot could well epitomize Rioja Alavesa?s riverside viticulture.

Opposite the vines, Viña Assa offers a singular attraction: the Mantible Bridge ruins. They are a little-known landmark in our land which deserves a separate post. We will write about its history in a future piece.
