In the last three years, the area of white grape vineyards in the DOCa Rioja has increased by 50%. Currently it already accounts for almost 10% of the denomination's total vinegrowing area.
And in sales volume, since 2015, white wine has raised from 16 milion liters to 22 million liters. We insist: in only three years!
There is no doubt, Rioja whites are a strong trend.Their increase in popularity and sales worldwide owes much to their versatility and to an increasing pursuit for freshness and an easy consumption.Besides this there is also a redoubling effort of promotion on the part of wineries, brands and administrations.A good example of this is the recent blind tasting of white wines organized by Rioja's Regulatory Council, which brought together a panel of 24 experts, including journalists, critics and opinion leaders from all over Spain.
Our white obtained an excellent result
Of a total of 220 white wines in five categories *, the tasters chose the best five of each. Our Muriel Fincas de la Villa 2017 is among the winners in the category of 2016 and 2017 vintages white wines with wood aging. It is a success that confirms us in our qualitative decisions: the selection of the best grapes and a winemaking that focuses in giving the young white wine a balanced contribution of oak barrels. The time in wood makes the wine gain in volume and entity, which are values that round out the personality of a wine which is made from viura grapes grown in Elciego and neighboring Rioja Alavesa townships.
* These categories were the following: monovarietal wines of indigenous varieties; coupage wines of indigenous varieties; white winess with non-native varieties "either monovarietal or coupage"; white wines with wood aging from the vintages 2016 and 2017; and white wines with wood aging from vintages prior to 2016.
