Just under 300 wines from 11 countries were assessed by a jury of 22 professionals at the International Wine and Woman Awards (Premios Internacionales Vino y Mujer). The result could not have been better for our wine Fundación Maga Reserva 2014: we were awarded a Grand Diamond medal, the highest prize in the competition.
The Wine and Woman competition, which is now in its 12th year, recognises the best wines made by women or wines in which women have played a leading role. This competition has a unique feature: the jury is exclusively formed by women. Regina Vanderlinde, President of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), took part in the last edition, which was held in Madrid on 9 and 10 May. She ensured that the competition was conducted in accordance with the industry's highest quality standards.
Successful call for entries and awards
The 2019 edition of Vino y Mujer has managed to continue the upward trend in the number of registrations. More wines than ever entered the eight categories of the competition, representing 62 producing regions worldwide.
Just over 20% of the participating wines were rewarded with a prize. In total, the jury handed out 63 awards, comprising 11 Grand Diamond, 32 Diamond and 20 Ruby medals. Red wines, and in particular barrel-aged red wines, won over 50% of the awards including some from Hungary, Mexico, Spain, Slovenia, Greece and Portugal. Our Fundación Maga Reserva 2014 was one of them, a thoroughly deserved recognition for a quality wine that encourages solidarity.
Our Foundation's wine
Fundación Maga Reserva, or "the Foundation's wine", as we know it, was the brainchild of Natalia Murúa, with Sara Ugarte advising on winemaking. Aged in French oak barrels for 14 months, this Reserva wine spends two years in bottle. It is sourced from 40-year-old vines planted in different parts of Elciego (Rioja Alavesa), where Muriel Wines is headquartered.
All proceeds from the sale of the Foundation's wine are used to finance Fundación Maga's charitable education and childhood initiatives in Cambodia and Sierra Leone.
